These legal terms and conditions (the “Terms”) are between you (“You”) and Currensea and by signing up for and using the United Airlines debit card (the “Card”), You agree to these Terms. You should read the Terms along with our Privacy Policy. It’s important that You understand these Terms, so if You have any questions, please contact Currensea at help.unitedairlines@currensea.com or call 020 3909 9734 (or +44 20 3909 9734 from abroad), leave a message, and We will be happy to explain.
What is Currensea?
- We are Currensea, a payment service that lets You connect Your existing Bank Account to Your Card. The Currensea platform powers a number of different Currensea Services. The specific Currensea Services available to You will be shown when You sign up to Currensea.
- This bit is important: when You sign up to the United Airlines Debit Card, it is not a bank account. It is a payment card that works with a Mobile App, connected to Your Bank Account via Open Banking. You can only have one Card in Your name:
- Any reference in these terms or on our website to Your “Card” means Your United Airlines Debit Card issued by Currensea and governed by these Terms (this may be a physical or virtual card depending on what You choose or is available to You when You sign up)
- Any reference in these terms or on our website to Your Subscription means Your Card and the Mobile App
- Any reference in these terms or on our website to Your “Bank Account” means Your third-party issued bank account which is linked to Your Card
- You must have an active Direct Debit when You authorise the payment until the payment has been debited from Your linked Bank Account
- For other defined terms please see the glossary at the end of these T&Cs
Who We are

- If You change Your name, move address, change Your Bank Account details or change Your contact details (including Your mobile phone number or email address), You must notify Currensea as soon as possible. We may need to carry out additional Know-Your-Customer (KYC) checks to confirm that the details and information You provided are correct. If required, We may perform a soft credit check via a credit reference agency.
- To be eligible for a personal Card, You must:
- Be aged 18 or over
- Have a valid UK mobile phone number
- Have an active UK current Bank Account
- Be registered and have access to online or mobile banking
How to contact us

How Currensea works
- When You sign up to Currensea, You link Your UK Bank Account through Your bank's secure online banking platform or mobile application. We perform a check on Your linked Bank Account to ensure it meets our eligibility criteria. Once linked, You provide Us with the authority to debit Your linked Bank Account for transactions made using Your Card. By linking a Bank Account, You confirm that You have all necessary permissions and authority to do so. You acknowledge and agree that You remain personally and solely liable for all amounts due to Currensea in connection with Your use of the Card. This includes, for the avoidance of doubt, where You or any other named holder of a linked Bank Account disputes Currensea’s rights in respect of an Authorised transaction. Authorised spend using Your Authorised spend using Your Card, will be taken as consent to debit Your linked Bank Account for the GBP/£ equivalent amount, based on the applicable exchange rate.
- For each transaction made, We will send an email to the email address You have provided, identifying the Merchant and the amount of the transaction. Where used for Foreign Spend, the email will also show the exchange rate used and the GBP/£ amount that will be debited from Your Bank Account.
- You have also authorised Us to access information from Your Bank Account, based on the usage conditions in our Privacy Policy. This authorisation and Your Bank Account link is reconfirmed by You each time You access the app or use Your Card. You can update Your linked Bank Accounts via the app at any time.
Costs of using Currensea
- Currensea is a platform powering different Currensea Services. Costs for using the Card services are:
- The Card is a subscription debit card that enables users to earn MileagePlusSM miles as they spend in the UK and internationally. For details on how MileagePlusSM miles are earned, please see the Card Benefits section in this document.
- Currensea charges a Subscription for its services. Please see the Pricing Plan section below.
- The Card is also designed to save You money on international purchases. Our Realtime Exchange Rates can be found here.
- Please note that the exchange rate may change throughout the day, but We will let You know what rate has been applied to Your transaction in Your confirmation email. You can also check the relevant exchange rate via our website or the Mobile App.
- Whenever You make a payment in a foreign currency using Your Card You will be charged the Realtime Exchange Rate. We may also add an exchange fee, as further set out in these Terms. An additional rate applies to ATM withdrawals over a certain amount per month. Please see the Pricing Plan table for more information. Please note, some ATM providers may charge a separate transaction fee. For the avoidance of doubt, We do not permit ATM withdrawals in GBP/£.
Using Currensea
- When using Your Card to make a transaction, You must have enough funds available in Your linked Bank Account. We will check the balance of Your Bank Account to ensure there are sufficient funds before approving the transaction. Once a transaction has been authorised, We are immediately entitled to collect the funds which will be collected from Your Bank Account via Direct Debit or Faster Payment. If We are unable to collect the funds from Your Bank Account, We may charge You for late payment. Your Card is not a credit card and is not intended for borrowing.
- You will need the Mobile App accompanying the Card to authenticate online payments.
- If the Direct Debit or Faster Payment is unsuccessful, We will contact You regularly and keep trying to collect the funds, or request that these are sent to Us via Faster Payment. If We have still not received the funds after 7 days, We will charge a one-off late payment fee of up to £35. If payment remains outstanding for more than 30 days, We will also charge an additional monthly fee of 25% of the overdue amount (inclusive of any late payment fee) to cover Our costs. Your Card will be blocked until outstanding funds are repaid. Currensea reserves the right to refer any outstanding payments, including any additional fees, to a third party. If further fees are applied by those third parties, these will also be added to the balance. Outstanding payments may be reported to credit reference agencies and negatively impact Your personal credit score. Currensea also reserves the right to terminate our service to You and cancel Your Card.
- You can keep track of how much You are spending via the transaction list in Your Mobile App.
- Before Your Annual Fee payment is taken by Direct Debit, We will give You at least 14 calendar days’ advance notice of the amount, date and purpose of the payment, unless a shorter notice period has been expressly agreed with You. This notice will normally be provided by email. If we need to change the amount, date or frequency of a renewal payment, We will notify You in advance using the same notice period.
- All Direct Debits are protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee. You can read the full Direct Debit Guarantee wording here: https://www.directdebit.co.uk/direct-debit-guarantee/
- Spend on Your Card is subject to our Fair Use Policy.
- We may block a transaction. Reasons we may do this include:
- We suspect any criminal or fraudulent activity on Your Card (to protect you)
- We’re not legally allowed to process the transaction
- The transaction takes You over Your Currensea spend limits
- You don’t have enough funds in Your linked Bank Account
- We’ve had to apply a fee due to uncollected funds
- Your spend is not in-line with our Fair Use Policy
- The transaction is for a non-permitted purchase. Details of non-permitted purchases can be found in our Fair Use Policy
- If We do block a transaction, we'll let You know as soon as possible via email. Therefore, please ensure Your contact details are correct.
- We are not responsible for any losses You incur if we do not authorise or block a transaction. Also, We are not responsible if any merchant refuses to accept the Card.
Limits
- Spend limits will be based on Your balance and transaction history, as well as other information We hold on You.
- Your spend limits can be viewed in Your Mobile App. These limits may change over time, in Our sole discretion, and We will let You know if they do. Please note, Your Card cannot be used for ATM withdrawals in the UK.
- Please contact Us at help.unitedairlines@currensea.com if You want to discuss Your limits.
Keeping Your card safe
- You must always keep Your Card and its details safe and never let anyone else use them. You should memorise Your PIN and other security information and keep them secret at all times.
- You must only ever reveal Your card number to make a transaction, report the loss or theft of the card, or if We ask You to. We’ll never contact You to ask You for Your passwords, CVC, PIN, OTP token or full security details. When We contact You, we’ll always check we’re corresponding with the right person by asking You several security questions associated with Your Subscription.
- If Your Card is lost or stolen, or You see unrecognised transactions, You must freeze it immediately via Your Mobile App and contact Us at help.unitedairlines@currensea.com as soon as possible. If You need a new card, We may charge You GBP £5 for a replacement.
- We will usually, but at our discretion, refund You for any unrecognised transactions; reasons for which You may not get a refund include:
- You didn't keep Your Card, CVC, OTP, and/or PIN safe (as We have told You above)
- You broke the terms of these T&Cs or website Terms of Use
- The unrecognised transactions are over 13 months old
- You acted fraudulently or with intent or gross negligence
- The losses are not the direct result of our actions
Authorised transactions
- All spend using Your Card is deemed as authorised, thereby giving Us the authority to take the funds from Your linked Bank Account via Direct Debit or Faster Payment. This means You must always have an active Direct Debit.
- You will receive an email notification each time a transaction takes place using Card or a daily summary of transactions. If You did not authorise the transaction, You must freeze Your card via Your Currensea dashboard or Mobile App immediately and contact Us at help.unitedairlines@currensea.com as soon as possible. If You have been a victim of fraud, We will usually, but at Our discretion, refund any money You have lost; reasons for which You may not get a refund include that You acted fraudulently or with gross negligence (as listed above).

- For Your protection, Currensea supports Mastercard™ chargebacks. This may help You reclaim funds if:
- Your goods do not arrive
- Your goods arrive damaged
- Your goods are different from how they were described
- The Merchant has ceased trading
- Chargeback requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, at Our sole discretion, and will require supporting evidence to be submitted by the Cardholder. If You need to raise a chargeback, please contact Us at help.unitedairlines@currensea.com.
Marketing preferences
- By providing Your contact details and opting in to receive marketing communications, You consent to receive marketing materials from Currensea and the United MileagePlus Program, and from carefully selected partners. You can opt out at any time. For more details, please see our Privacy Policy.
Our Cards
- Currensea offers plans for personal customers. Details of our plans can be found here.
- When You subscribe to one of our plans, You are committed for the full annual Subscription term. No right to cancel within 14 days of sign-up (i.e. no cooling off period) exists. Payment is collected via Direct Debit or Faster Payment. If You choose to end the Agreement before the 12-month term has elapsed, You will be charged for any outstanding payments. If You have activated the Card or received any benefits associated with the Card, including but not limited to MileagePlus miles and/or Welcome Bonus Offers and/or Limited Time Offers (LTOs), You will not be entitled to a full or partial refund of the Annual Fee. If You cancel without having activated or otherwise received any benefits associated with the Card, We reserve the right to retain GBP 5 from any refund to which You are eligible to cover Card issuance and onboarding costs.
- Your Subscription will automatically renew at the end of the term. To prevent this, please get in touch with Us at least 30 days before Your Subscription is due to end.

Ending Your Subscription
- To cancel Your Subscription, You need to get in touch with Us by emailing help.unitedairlines@currensea.com.

Miles Earning Overview:
- Cardholders will accrue MileagePlus miles only after activating the Card and linking their MileagePlus account with the Currensea United Debit Card account.
- You will receive MileagePlus miles only for Valid Spend, which are purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits which are eligible for MileagePlus miles earning under the Fair Use Policy in these Terms.
- In addition to the standard MileagePlus miles earned, We may from time-to-time launch promotions to offer incremental MileagePlus miles (bonus MileagePlus miles) whether on its own or through the United MileagePlus Program or other third parties. Such promotional offers will be governed by the terms and conditions of the applicable promotion, as well as these Terms. The terms and conditions of the applicable promotion will be communicated at the time of the launch of such a promotion.
- Cardholders will be able to view all MileagePlus miles earned on the Card in the Mobile App. MileagePlus miles can be viewed by visiting https://www.united.com/en/gb/myunited

- MileagePlus miles have no monetary value and are not exchangeable for cash.
- Miles accrued, awards, and benefits issued are subject to change and are subject to the rules of the United MileagePlus® program, including without limitation the Premier® program (the "MileagePlus Program"), which are expressly incorporated herein. Please allow 6-8 weeks after completed qualifying activity for miles to post to Your account. United® may change the MileagePlus Program including, but not limited to, rules, regulations, travel awards and special offers or terminate the MileagePlus Program at any time and without notice. United and its subsidiaries, affiliates and agents are not responsible for any products or services of other participating companies and partners. Taxes and fees related to award travel are the responsibility of the member. Bonus award miles, award miles and any other miles earned through non-flight activity do not count toward qualification for Premier status unless expressly stated otherwise. The accumulation of mileage or Premier status or any other status does not entitle members to any vested rights with respect to the MileagePlus Program. All calculations made in connection with the MileagePlus Program, including without limitation with respect to the accumulation of mileage and the satisfaction of the qualification requirements for Premier status, will be made by United Airlines® and MileagePlus in their discretion and such calculations will be considered final. Merchant Classification
- Merchants are assigned a specific merchant identification number (ID). We do not control the assignment of these numbers and are not responsible for the ID used by Merchants.
- Sometimes You may expect a purchase to fit within a rewards category, but if the ID assigned to the Merchant was not grouped into that category, as recognised by Currensea, Your purchase may not qualify for a specific Earn Rate or reward.
Card Application and United MileagePlus Membership
- The Card applicant will be responsible for providing their United MileagePlus Membership Number upon Card application approval. If the applicant fails to provide the applicant’s United MileagePlus Membership Number, a new United MileagePlus Membership Number may be generated for the applicant. - These offers are non-transferable and may not be combined with any other discounts, promotions, or offers unless expressly permitted.
- We expect You to enter accurate information when required by our partners in order to collect associated benefits or rewards. Failure to do so may result in the reward being declined or removed.
- If an offer includes specific terms and conditions, those specific terms will prevail over these general Terms in the event of any conflict.
Net Valid Spend
-
Unless otherwise stated, any spend criteria mentioned in these Terms or other offer specific terms and conditions relate to net Valid Spend. In other words, this would exclude any spend which is not eligible for MileagePlus miles earn and/or other limited spend under the Fair Use Policy and it also does not include any refunds and/or Chargebacks.
Miles Booster

- This feature can be disabled by You at any time. As with the underlying transaction, this feature is subject to our Fair Use Policy and all MileagePlus miles earned in this way remain pending until verified.
- We reserve the right to amend the terms of this offer, or remove it in its entirety, at any time. We will endeavour to inform You of any upcoming changes to Earn Rates at least 30 days prior to it coming into effect.

- Currensea and United Airlines (including its subsidiaries and affiliates) will not be liable for a failure to perform any obligations under these Terms if due directly or indirectly to the failure of any machinery or communication system, industrial dispute, war or act of God or anything outside their control. Nor shall Currensea or United Airlines (including its subsidiaries and affiliates) be responsible for any delay by Merchants in transmitting evidence on any Card transaction.

Some categories of government and financial transaction spend may incur a small surcharge, where additional Merchant fee caps have been imposed. Where applicable, confirmation will be provided prior to transaction authorisation. By approving the transaction, You accept the surcharge.
We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to review any transaction or group of transactions. If We reasonably believe that a transaction or group of transactions has been entered into artificially or fraudulently for the primary purpose of earning miles or other rewards, We may, without prior notice, block the earning of miles on such transactions and take any additional actions deemed necessary, including but not limited to account suspension or termination. We reserve the right to amend this list at any given time, but We will notify Cardholders in advance of any material changes taking effect.
